The Beaufort County Arts Council may have relocated to the Turnage Theatre Properties, but some things remain the same. BCAC’s 50th Annual Juried Fine Arts Show will open to the public on Oct. 16. The show will feature over 400 works by approximately 200 artists in a variety of mediums. The show will be open free to the public through Oct. 18 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Washington Civic Center on Gladden Street in historic downtown Washington.

According to BCAC executive director Joey Toler, the organization has big hopes for the 50^th-annual exhibit.

“This exhibit is older than the arts council, dating back to the days of the Pamlico Arts Group in the late 1960’s. Back then the show was held outside by Haven’s Wharf. I can only imagine what it meant to manage an outdoor art exhibit,” said Toler.

The Washington Civic Center has been the location for the Fine Arts Show for many years, and that will continue for the 2014 exhibit.

“Our galley at the Turnage is just too small to accommodate all the art,” said Toler. “So the show is now an off-site event for us, which offers it’s own set of new challenges.”

BCAC will receive works for the Fine Arts Show on Sunday, Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Civic Center. Artists may enter up to four works in four categories: watercolors, oils and acrylics, graphics/open mixed, and three-dimensional. The entry fee is $20 for one or two entries and $7.50 each up to four entries. A show prospectus with Fine Arts Show guidelines is available by calling or emailing the Arts Council, and is also available on their website at www.beaufortcountyartscouncil.org under the ‘events’ section.

BCAC is pleased to announce that the juror for the 2014 will be Michael Drought, the Director of East Carolina University’s School of Art & Design. Drought received his MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Cash awards in the amount of $4,700 are presented annually at the Fine Arts Show. Awards are given for first, second, third and honorable mention in each category. Cash awards of $150 for first place and $75 for second place are presented in each category. Twelve additional awards include the Frances M. and William R. Roberson, Jr. Best in Show Award of $500, Richard W. Tripp Best Watercolor Landscape Award of $300, East Carolina Wildfowl Guild Award of $150, Margaret Hodges Hackney Award for best entry by an artist from Beaufort County of $200, Pamlico-Tar River Foundation Award of $75, the Young Ones Award for best emerging artist age 35 and under of $100, the Irene Glover Forbes Pottery Award of $50, The Garden World Award of $100 given by the Washington Garden Club, the Franke Rumley Textile Award of $100, the People First Award given by Louise and Harold Lane, and the Mark and Suzette Bardill Purchase Award of $1,000.

The 50th annual Fine Arts Show will be the second year of the new Dr. William E. Kidd People’s Choice Award with a cash award of $500. The award is sponsored by Hester Anne Kidd and family. The viewing public will be allowed to vote on their favorite work through 3 p.m. on Oct. 18. At that time, all votes will be tallied and the award will be announced before exhibit closing at 5 p.m.

The Fine Arts Show newest award will called the Creative Illusions Award and offers a cash award of $300. The award is for the best abstract work submitted.

“We are always pleased to add awards to this show. This adds credibility to the event and attracts more entries,” said Toler.

All award selections will be on exhibit in the Washington Civic Center through Dec. 12.
