A local nonprofit that grants hunting and fishing trip wishes for disabled children and children with life threatening illnesses has had a busy summer and will celebrate the delivery of an off road track chair Friday.

Angels N Camo, based out of Washington, started its summer activities with its annual fundraiser, the Angels N Camo Summertime Turkey Shoot, which was a huge success, said Angels N Camo Founder Lisa Adams. The shoot involves 12 participants lined up and shooting at targets 30 yards away, and whoever gets closest to the bullseye, wins a cash prize. The event raised $2,100, with a strong showing of community support. The event featured two new activities: winners of the first Annual Angels N Camo Beards and Spurs contest were announced, and participants enjoyed an inflatable BB gun range, borrowed from a local National Wild Turkey Federation chapter, Adams said.

Contestants registered prior to turkey season, and once the season started, and they harvested their turkeys, the birds were scored at various check-in stations, Adams said. The contest included a men’s, women’s and kid’s division, in which contestants were scored based on their turkey’s weight, length of spurs and length of beards, using National Wild Turkey Federation guidelines. The winner of the men and women’s division each won a 12-guage shotgun, and the winner from the kid’s division won $100, Adams said.

“It (Turkey Shoot) started as our main fundraiser,” Adams said. “We wanted to do something a little bit different than everybody else so we wouldn’t compete with other organizations doing the same thing. We wanted to do something in our element.”

Adams said several fishing adventures were granted to area children, including Jacob Pittman, DJ Thompson, Garrett Mc Sweeney, all of Washington and Angel Barber of Williamston.

“This summer, we’ve been very busy,” Adams said. “I consider that being a success because we were able to grant those wishes. The highlight for me is I’m getting applications from kids I don’t even know. That means our name is getting out there.”

As the hunting season approaches, the nonprofit is gearing up for a deer hunting adventure wish for a child in Creswell, Adams said. With the delivery of its new Action Offroad Trackchair set for today at 5 p.m. at Goose Creek State Park, Angels N Camo will be able to provide an even better experience for those participants who are handicapped. The chair was purchased from fundraising events, a $3,000 grant from the Tony Stewart Foundation and contributions from a local foundation.

Adams said the next goal for the nonprofit is to raise funds for a portable hydraulic hunting tree stand. Angels N Camo raises money through its truck and trailer set up at community events, in which they sell hats, t-shirts, lanyards and other items. On Nov. 22, ANC will host a pancake and sausage breakfast at the Chocowinity Fire Department, the morning of the Chocowinity Christmas parade. Following, there will be a booth set up at the Chocowinity Fire Department Auxiliary Christmas Expo, Adams said.

“We’ve had a ton of community support,” Adams said. “Every time we set up a booth or go somewhere, they always come out to support us in one way or another.”
