On Aug. 19, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a report of fraud from the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office. Numerous checks were reported stolen in Pitt County and passed in Beaufort County. The Sheriff’s Office began an investigation and conducted interviews.

As a result, Investigator Jeremy Landeck applied for and obtained warrants charging Derrick Wayne Modlin, 36, of North Boyd Road in Pinetown, and Sharon Lynn Weaver, 37, of Redmon Road in Elm City, with five counts each of obtaining property by false pretense. Modlin was arrested on Aug. 27 by the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office. He was transported to the Magistrates’ Office and brought before Magistrate Sadler. Modlin was released after posting a $6,000 secured bond. Weaver was arrested on Sept. 5 by the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office. She was held on a $3,000 secured bond.
