GREENVILLE — Junior forward Kendall Frey scored her team-leading third goal of the season in the 13th minute, as the East Carolina women’s soccer team recorded its seventh shutout of the year in a 1-0 victory over Campbell on Sunday afternoon at Johnson Stadium.

Making her first-career start for the Pirates, senior goalkeeper Erika Lenns made four starts to preserve the shutout. East Carolina (6-2-1) completed its non-conference slate by shutting out seven of its nine opponents. The last ECU club to hold seven teams scoreless in a single season was the 2008 squad.

“I thought we started off pretty well, but when we got to the final third of the field, we made some really bad decisions,” head coach Rob Donnenwirth said. “Finally we had a good combination and got somebody in.”

Senior Brianna Spitler took the first shot of the game from inside the Camels’ penalty area and struck the crossbar, but the rebound was collected and cleared by the defense. Following two more shot attempts by the Pirates, freshman Brittany Fary and sophomore Lana Spitler’s combined touches put the ball on Frey’s foot in the center of the opposing goal area, where she settled and finished a shot to the left of the goalkeeper and into the back of the net for the game’s only score.

The goal was the 11th of Frey’s career and first game-winning strike of the season. The Chester Springs, Pa., native now has six game-winners in her career and leads ECU with eight points in 2014. The assists were the first of Fary’s career and the first for Spitler on the year.

The Pirates outshot Campbell (2-4-1), 7-3, in the first half, while holding a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal and 2-0 edge in corner kick chances.

East Carolina continued to push the ball forward and saw a plethora of quality scoring opportunities in the second half, but could not punch another shot into the Camels’ goal. ECU outshot Campbell, 9-3, in the second half and 16-6 overall for the game.

“In the end, if we got that second goal, I think it probably would have been a much different game, but we didn’t,” Donnenwirth said. “I give credit to Campbell because I thought they never stopped, battled and made it difficult to penetrate.”

Fary led all players with three shots on the afternoon, while Lana Spitler, Brianna Spitler and freshman Rachel Renfrow took two shots apiece.

Campbell goalkeeper Samantha Lawson made eight saves, while forward Ashley Clark led the team with two shot attempts.

The Pirates will remain at home for its next three matches – all of which will be league contests. They will host UConn in the inaugural American Athletic Conference match Thursday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m.
