Northside High School was honored with a visit by North Carolina Sen. Bill Cook to celebrate Constitution Day 2014. Upon arrival at Northside the senator took the helm in the Air Force Junior ROTC classroom. He asked numerous questions to the cadets such as: How many Supreme Court justices are there? What does the Constitution do for you? How many Amendments are there? The students who got the questions right were given a pamphlet on the U.S. Constitution and fascinating facts by the senator.
At 10:15, the senator and approximately 150 students, teachers and principals Mr. Clark and Mrs. Cornelius attended a ceremony at the school’s flagpole. Cadets Aleah Brinn (10th grade) and Dawson Jones (10th grade) raised the American flag and paid proper military customs and courtesies. Colonel Mark Remick (Northside senior aerospace science instructor) gave the student body a brief overview of Constitutional law. The ceremony concluded with Master Sergeant Charlie Woolard (Northside aerospace science instructor) and Cadet Matt Smith (12th grade) conducting a retirement of several American flags as Cadet Brinn played taps.
Students were dismissed and Cook went with Younce to her civic honors class and had a discussion about his job in the General Assembly, how a bill becomes a law and the importance of the Constitution.
The Constitution commemoration started in 1940 when a joint resolution was passed requesting the President to set aside this day to recognize all those who had attained the status of American citizenship. In 2004, Congress changed the designation of this day to “Constitution Day and Citizenship Day.” Two of the day’s requirements are that the head of each federal agency provide employees with educational and training materials concerning the Constitution and that each federal education institution hold a program for students every Sept. 17.
Cook represents District 1, which is comprised of Beaufort, Camden, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hyde, Pasquotank and Perquimans counties.
