A JOB WELL DONE: Representatives from both Cypress Landing Golf Club and Washington Yacht and Country Club, along with community members met at the Marion L. Shepherd Cancer Center to celebrate the money raised from the fundraising events held at each golfing community.

The Marion L. Shepherd Cancer Center received a check from Cypress Landing Golf Club and Washington Yacht and Country Club on Wednesday.

The check was a combination of several fundraisers the two clubs held last month: the Hope and Heroes Walk, the sale of pink and purple bows, hole sponsorships, honor board signs, raffle tickets, and the Let’s Tee It Up For a Cure golf tournament.

Though the two clubs are competitors among golf-enthusiasts, both came together to raise money for Beaufort County’s only center for cancer patients, survivors and caregivers. Last year, Cypress Landing conducted the fundraiser, and this year, asked WYCC to join the initiative.

“The sponsors that came forth and donated large sums of money we especially want to thank them, all the way down to purchasers of the bows, raffle tickets, the honor board, the golf tournament….,” said Paul Klein, WYCC co-chair for the event.

Cypress Landing event co-chair Nancy Hackett and Klein presented the check, which totaled $69, 225, to the Marion L. Shepherd Cancer Center Foundation Board President Ainsley Rusevlyan. That sum surpassed last year’s total of around $29,000.

“We had a lot of donations,” Hackett said. “To be able to get all these donations, that’s why we could give a check of this size. That’s why it was so nice — really we hardly had any expenses. This community is just…it just warms your heart.”

The money raised will go toward providing complimentary therapies, including massages and educational programs to patients, caregivers and survivors, according to Rusevlyan. It will aid in co-payments for prescriptions or the prescriptions themselves and provide transportation to and from the center. The money will also go to those cancer patients that may be struggling with a bill as a result of their diagnosis, including gas and utilities.

“It means a great deal,” said John Inzerillo, medical director of the center. “If we can help people who do not have the means to sometimes even get to the cancer center because of gas money they don’t have and also for helping copay on some of the medications. There’s a lot of benefits to be given to the people in need so we’re very appreciative of everything that has been done.”
