ECA swimmers compete for chance at state championship

GREENVILLE — More than 135 swimmers from East Carolina Aquatics competed in the ECA Last Chance Meet Jan. 31-Feb. 1 at Minges Natatorium on the East Carolina campus.

The intrasquad meet was the final opportunity of the season for swimmers to qualify for upcoming state championship meets.

Several swimmers recorded best times, achieved state meet time standards or met new sectional time cuts, while two boys set new team records.

Luke McCarthy of Winterville and Cayden Pake of Washington broke team records in the 8 and under boys category. McCarthy bested the 100 breast record from 2009 by more than a second with a time of 1:36.20. Pake beat his own record in the 100 fly with a new best time of 1:34.11.

Abigail Burns of Greenville and Zach Compton of Lucama made new N.C. Senior State Championship qualifying times.

The following made new 14 and under N.C. State Championship time cuts: Burns, Brooke Despres of Winterville, Corry Eason of Greenville, Cameron Eure of Morehead City, Faith Koesters of Winterville, Julia Kohake of Winterville, Virginia Kohake of Winterville, Colby Loveless of Cape Carteret, Grace McCarthy of Winterville, Tristan Pake of Washington, Lyndsey Reeve of Emerald Isle and Bethany Tart of Winterville. The meet will be held at the end of the month in Greensboro.

The following made new qualifying times for the Southern Zone South East Age Group Sectional Championship to be held in Atlanta, Georgia: Campbell Barnes of Chocowinity, Burns, Eure, Koesters, Virginia Kohake and Tart.

East Carolina Aquatics is a year-round swim team for youth and adults ages 4 and up with more than 450 swimmers at sites in Greenville, Morehead City, Cape Carteret and Washington. For more information, visit www.swimeca.org.
