DYNAMIC DUO: Alex DePue and Miguel DeHoyos will perform for 1,000 Beaufort County Schools’ students on Monday, following a Sunday afternoon Beaufort County Concert Association show. Single tickets to the event are $25.

International duo Alex DePue and Miguel DeHoyos have been called “a heady mix of virtuosity and sophistication,” and Monday, a thousand Beaufort County students will be treated to their work, courtesy of the Beaufort County Concert Association and local corporate sponsors.

But before then, the remaining Beaufort County residents can see the wildly eclectic show that tackles both the classical and popular music at a Sunday matinee at the Washington High School Performing Arts Center.

The show starts at 3 p.m., the last matinee of the BCCA season—one that promises to provide entertainment for all, according to Jerrie Oughton, a BCCA board member.

“I have heard them and they’re zipping and blazing,” Oughton said.

DePue is the youngest sibling of the famed “DePue Brothers,” who have built their fame as bluegrass musicians on conspicuously successful classical music careers, according to a press release from Live On Stage, Inc. Depue achieved top honors in youth violin competitions and national fiddle contests and is now making his own genre-bending mark on the family’s legacy, appearing with Steve Vai, Nashville recording artist Chris Cagle, and in his duo project with Mexican guitarist Miguel DeHoyos. DePue and DeHoyos have performed with the Philadelphia Symphony, were feature performers at the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Grand Master Fiddler Championships in 2009 and have recorded two albums for the Spontaneous Records label, the release said.

The duo also is the perfect kind of outreach program for local students, Oughton said.

Oughton is an advocate for keeping the arts in the schools and she, for one, sees the effect of the various outreach programs provided by local arts foundations.

“I live in a neighborhood with a bunch of teenage kids. They come over to our house and they talk about these concerts when they’re done, all the time,” Oughton said. “They just go wild over these concerts.”

It’s not just the entertainment value that’s important, however. Oughton said the outreach concerts teach children how to act at performing arts shows and appreciate different types of music.

“They’re not all their cup of tea, but they still learn to sit through it,” Oughton said. “To me, a thousand kids Monday morning? I think this is wonderful.”

Single tickets to Sunday’s event can be purchased for $25 each. For more information about the Beaufort County Concert Association, visit www.gobcca.org or call 252-948-1431.
