Talk about a hot ticket
Washington’s homecoming game against D.H. Conley was so hot, gatekeepers had to actually go make more tickets to accommodate the huge crowd.
The Pam Pack certainly didn’t disappoint the nearly 3,000 in attendance as it cruised to a 35-0 win over the Vikings in Friday’s Coastal Conference opener at J.G. “Choppy” Wagner Stadium.
Senior Travis Daniels certainly did his part for the Pam Pack (4-1, 1-0), which has now beaten Conley (2-3, 0-1) three straight times. Daniels ran for 158 yards and a pair of scores on 17 carries. The Pack finished with 306 yards on the ground.
Daniels, who didn’t play in the fourth quarter, now has 989 yards and a dozen touchdowns this year.
It didn’t take him long to get started.
On Washington’s second series, Daniels busted up the middle and sprinted away from his pursuers for a 62-yard score. Justin Meekins tacked on the first of his five PATs for the 7-0 lead.
The score was set up by a huge defensive play from the Pack. Conley’s Jeremy Worsley (55 yards on 10 carries) appeared to be headed for the end zone down the sideline when Pack defensive back Tony Turnage raced over and ripped the ball out of Worsley’s hands for a fumble. Dakuan Spencer pounced on it — the first of four turnovers created by the Washington defense.
The Pack took advantage of a botched Conley snap late in the first half to take a 14-0 lead. Cody Cunningham recovered a fumble on the poor snap. Three plays later, Daniels smashed into the end zone from two yards out.
Washington put the game away with a 21-point third quarter. Austin Thompson, who clicked on 8-of-11 passes for 76 yards, hit Mike Moore (four catches for 40 yards) on an out pattern for a 10-yard score to spark the big quarter.
Washington made it 28-0 on its next possession when Jamont Jones, who took a reverse from Daniels, scampered in from 17 yards out.
Roray Razor, who ran for 69 yards on five carries, capped the scoring with a 30-yard burst late in the third quarter.
The Pack defense, which got fumble recoveries from Cunningham, D.J. McKinney and Spencer, held the Vikings to 172 yards of total offense. Meanwhile, Mike Moore seemed to be all over the field as he had a dozen tackles, including four on special teams.
Jones said he and his teammates are feeling good.
Washington returns to action next Friday night at home against South Central. It will be Walk of Fame night for the Pam Pack.
