Agencies await funding decisions

Washington’s City Council is scheduled to discuss funding for outside agencies during its meeting Monday.

Most of those agencies, during a Feb. 2 council meeting that between an hour and two hours, made their cases for city funding. Their presentations and other input during that meeting is expected to be part of the council’s discussion. Mayor Pro Tempore Bobby Roberson presided over the Feb. 2 meeting because Mayor Mac Hodges did not attend the meeting because of a death in his family.

Each agency at the meeting was allowed 10 minutes to make its case for funding. The agencies (and the amounts they requested) included the Washington Harbor District Alliance, $62,000; Beaufort County Arts Council, $50,000; North Carolina Estuarium, $25,000; Beaufort County Boys & Girls Club, $20,000; Purpose of God Annex, $20,000; Cornerstone Worship Center, $16,000; Zion Shelter, $8,500; N.C. Highway 17 Association, $7,500; Wright Flight, $5,000; The Blind Center, $1,500 and Eagle’s Wings, $1,000.

Agencies that did not or were unable to make presentations at the Feb. 2 meeting could be in the running for city funding, but such decisions would be up to the council.

In October 2014, the council decided outside agencies would have to make their cases for city funding.

The council has made it clear to the outside agencies that they will be starting from “zero” when it comes to being assured of receiving city dollars.

Outside agencies, such as the Zion Shelter, that meet certain needs not met or partially met by other entities would stand a better chance of receiving city money than agencies that don’t meet those needs or duplicate services provided by other entities, according to some council members.

The council meets at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the Council Chambers in the Municipal Building, 102 E. Second St. To view the council’s agenda for a specific meeting, visit the city’s website at www.washingtonnc.gov, click “Government” then “City Council” heading, then click “Meeting Agendas” on the menu to the right. Then click on the date for the appropriate agenda.
