Registration now open for inaugural Gull Run

Registration is now open for the inaugural Gull Run scheduled for  April 19, in Bath, as part of the annual spring festival at Beaufort County Community College, Gullfest.

Gull Run is a family friendly, five-kilometer race through Historic Bath that will take participants along a flat course along the waterfront near Bonner’s Point beginning at 2 p.m. at a start line near Bath Elementary School. It is also scheduled to end at the school.

The race is sponsored by the Hildred T. Moore Aquatic and Fitness Center and Gulls on the Run, the BCCC running club. It is co-sponsored by Sheetz of Washington which donated post-race refreshments.

The entry fee for the race is $25 in advance and $30 the day of the race. Registration is available via the Internet atwww.runtheeast.com by clicking on “Calendar” and scrolling down to April 19.

T-shirts bearing the race logo will be available to those who register by Wednesday, April 8.

Awards will be presented to the top three men and women overall and the top three men and women in seven age categories.

Unique medals for the top finishers are being designed and hand-made by BCCC

students and faculty in the college’s Mechanical Engineering Technology Program.

Gullfest will be held on the BCCC campus and in Bath Saturday and April 18 and 19. It will feature live bands, a car show, Miss Gullfest Pageant and an appearance by the actor who played Cletus on a popular television show.

Career Readiness Class for Nurse Aide I students to begin at BCCC

Class is scheduled to begin April 13, at Beaufort County Community College in a career readiness course for those students interested in enrolling in a Nurse Aide I course at the college.

The class, Career Readiness for Nurse Aides, will be offered 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays through May 6 in Room 823 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus. The instructor is Keisha Jennette.

The registration fee for the class is $70. This fee may be waived for those individuals who are currently unemployed, have received notice of a pending lay-off, are working and eligible for the Federal Income Tax Credit or working and earning wages at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. To qualify for the waiver, individuals must certify that they meet one of the criteria before they register for the class.

In addition to the registration fee, other costs of the program total $60 and include a $30 Career Readiness Certification fee; a $15 fee for the Workplace Observation Assessment, and a $15 fee for a performance assessment, which must be paid at the time of registration. These fees apply to all students.

The class will prepare students to take the Career Readiness Certification test and achieve at least a “silver” designation on the test and achieve a score of “1” on the Workplace Observation Assessment – pre-requisites for enrolling in a Nurse Aide I class or the Basic Skills Plus Nurse Aide I class. Students who do not achieve these benchmarks will be offered additional courses to help them qualify for the next available Nurse Aide I class. Students will also be required to complete the Performance Skills Assessment which identifies areas that may prevent them from getting a job including poor work attitudes and lack-luster job performance.

Students may register in Room 802 of Building 8. Completed forms and fees are due at the time of registration.

Cake Decorating I offered at BCCC

Renowned chef Julia Child once said, “A party without a cake is just a meeting.” And a beautifully decorated cake makes a party even better!

BCCC’s Division of Continuing Education will offer Cake Decorating I on Mondays from 6 to 8:30 p.m. beginning April 13 and ending May 18. The class will be held in Room 830 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus. The instructor is Michelle Daniels.

In this class, students will learn to decorate cakes that will delight their family and friends. They will learn to master elegant borders – including shells, rosettes and stars — create lovely flowers — including rosebuds, sweet peas and pansies — and even more cake decorating skills. A supply list will be given to students on the first night of class.

The registration fee is $40. Class size is limited so early registration is advised.
