KENLY — The Washington tennis team is sending four players to the 2-A regional tournament after a solid showing at the Eastern Plains Conference Tournament, which took place at North Johnston High School on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The brother duo of Holt and Ben McKeithan won the doubles conference championship, while Washington No. 1 Connor Wilkins coasted to his second-consecutive singles conference championship. Zack Pagnani, who plays No. 3 singles, fought his way to the semi-final match, but would fall.

Wilkins, Pagnani, Ben McKeithan and Holt McKeithan all qualify for the regional tournament, which will take place at Greene Central High School on May 1 and 2.

 

WASHINGTON TRACK AND FIELD COMES THROUGH IN FINAL HOME MEET

Both the Washington boys’ and girls’ track and field teams took first place on Wednesday in the Pam Pack’s final home meet of the 2015 regular season.

For the boys, Washington’s score of 77 edged second-place Beddingfield by nine points, while Southwest Edgecombe finished in third with 24 points. The girls’ score of 76 edged Beddingfield by seven points and Southwest Edgecombe finished third with 17.

First place finishers for the Washington girls were Caitlin Hales in the high jump (4-02), Alexis Moore in the 400-meter dash (1:07), Cierra Hales in the 100-meter hurdles (18.60), Guadalupe Hernandez in the 3200-meter run (14:35) and the 4×800, 4×200 and 4×400 first string relay teams.

First place finishers for the Washington boys were Zac Bridgeman in the high jump (5-06), Brandon Jackson in the shot put (42-06), Diavontrei Moore in the 100-meter dash (11.10) and the 300-meter hurdles (42.70), Jarquez Keyes in the 110-meter hurdles (15.60) and the 4×200 and 4×400 first string relay teams.

Washington will head to the Eastern Plains Conference Tournament at North Pitt High School on Wednesday.

 

TERRA CEIA BASEBALL COMPLETES SEASON SWEEP OF PUNGO

BELHAVEN — For the first time in many years, the Terra Ceia baseball team locked up the season sweep of rival Pungo on Wednesday, knocking off the Raiders, 7-2.

Knights starter Tyler Hendrix pitched five strong innings, allowing two runs (none earned) and striking out six, improving his season record to 4-0. Austin Roscoe, Austin Wynne and Quentin Van Essendelft all crossed home plate twice in the game.

With the win, Terra Ceia improves to 12-4 (6-3 TIC) and will travel to Northeast Academy on Monday for the Tarheel Independent Conference Tournament.
