TUESDAY ROUNDUP: Washington baseball blasts North Johnston on Senior Night

The Washington baseball team won its third-straight game on Tuesday, knocking off conference foe North Johnston, 7-1, and moving into fourth place in the Eastern Plains Conference.
After a scoreless first, Washington exploded in the second inning for five runs and never looked back. North Johnston’s lone run came in the seventh inning.
The Pam Pack combined for 12 hits, as sophomore Nick Everette and senior Grayson Gruninger led the way with three hits apiece, while seniors Jamond Ebron and Patrick Thompson both doubled in the game.
Thompson went the distance for Washington, allowing six hits and one earned run, striking out four.
With the win, Washington improves to 5-13 (4-5 EPC). Scores from Wednesday night’s game against North Pitt will be available in Friday’s paper.
WASHINGTON SOFTBALL DROPS FINAL EPC GAME TO NORTH JOHNSTON
The Washington softball team’s six-game win streak came to an end on Tuesday at the hands of North Johnston, 4-3.
The Pam Pack held a 2-1 lead after two innings, until the Panthers (13-6, 5-3 EPC) opened up for three runs in the third off senior Haley Hutchins, who finished the day with five strikeouts, allowing four hits, two walks and four runs (three earned). Washington scored a run in the fifth, but was held scoreless through the final two frames.
Seniors Haley Wright and Allison Brantley each finished with two hits and a RBI apiece, while Jessica Evans, Jada Lodge, Catie Dority, Chrissy McKissick and Meghan Moore combined for the Pam Pack’s five other hits in the game. For North Johnston, senior Kaylynn Batten went 3-for-4 with two runs and a double.
With the loss, Washington drops to 14-4 (7-3 Eastern Plains) and will close out the regular season tomorrow at South Central.
NCHSAA SINGLES, DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIPS UP FOR GRABS THIS WEEKEND IN MEN’S TENNIS
CHAPEL HILL (NCHSAA) — Championships in singles and doubles in four different classifications are up for grabs this weekend, as the North Carolina High School Athletic Association holds its annual men’s tennis tournament championships at three different sites.
Semifinalists in both singles and doubles at the regional level qualified for the state championships.
The 4-A championships are scheduled for Millbrook Exchange Park in Raleigh, while the 3-A event will be held at the Burlington Parks and Recreation Tennis Center. Both the 1-A and the 2-A championships are set for the Cary Tennis Center.
Action will get underway on Friday morning with the opening round of play at 9 a.m. after the coaches’ meeting in all classifications. Two rounds will be played on Friday, with the semifinals Saturday morning and the championship matches on Saturday afternoon. Since the field is smaller for the 1-A tournament, the only Saturday match will be the championship Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
More tennis finals are scheduled for next week, as all four classes of the men’s dual team tennis championships will be May 16 at the Burlington Tennis Center.
THIRD ANNUAL BEAUFORT COUNTY SUMMER VOLLEYBALL SKILLS CLINIC
The Junior Volleyball Skills Clinic at Washington High School for rising first, second, third, fourth and fifth graders will take place on June 22 and 23 from 9 a.m. to noon. The Middle School Volleyball Skills Clinic for rising sixth, seventh and eighth graders will take place on July 27 and 28 from 9 a.m. to noon. Each camper will receive a complimentary T-shirt.
