GREENSBORO — The Southside boys’ track and field team finished third overall on Friday at the NCHSAA 1-A state championships held at Irwin Belt Track at North Carolina A&T University.

Senior captain Tyreik Gaskins won the state championship in the 200-meter dash with a blazing fast time of 22.65 seconds, while also taking home third place in the 100-meter dash (11.16).

The boys’ 4-by-200-meter relay, consisting of Lawrence Brown, Zikayah Crawford, Raquan Ward and Gaskins won the state championship by about one second over Tarboro with a time of 1:31.40.

Other top performers were the 4-by-400-meter relay team (fifth place), the 4-by-100-meter relay team (fifth place), Brown in the long jump (11th place) and Ronald Dennis in the triple jump (10th place).

 

WASHINGTON’S WHITNEY TAKES HOME BRONZE AT 2-A TRACK STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

GREENSBORO — Washington senior Javon Whitney finished third in the long jump on Saturday at the NCHSAA 2-A state championships held at the Irwin Belt Track at North Carolina A&T University.

After a leap of 22 feet, seven inches at the eastern regional meet a week earlier, Whitney’s mark of 21 feet, 11 inches was good enough to take third place by five inches. Jayhlen Washington of North Brunswick took first with a 23-foot, three-inch leap, while Damani Sharpe of Beddingfield took second with a 22-foot, 11.5-inch jump.

Whitney also finished seventh in the triple jump with a leap that measured 43 feet, five inches.

Washington’s Brandon Jackson finished eighth in the shot put with a throw of 46 feet, three inches.

 

ECU’S BROOKS NAMED THE AMERICAN PLAYER OF THE WEEK

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (ECU) — East Carolina junior Garrett Brooks has been named American Athletic Conference Player-of-the-Week according to announcement by the league Monday.

Brooks helped the Pirates (36-20, 14-9) to a perfect 4-0 week and a second place finish in the league standings after batting a team-best .571 (4-for-7) with two home runs, four RBI and three RBI. He recorded at least one hit, one RBI and scored at least one run in all three starts.

The Chesapeake, Va. native started the week going 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored against instate foe Elon. Brooks continued his week Thursday belting his second career home run, a two-run shot, at Cincinnati while recording a pair of hits in the Pirates 7-3 victory.

Friday he connected on his third home run of the season, second of the series, sending a solo shot to right field off the scoreboard in a series clinching 6-4 victory. In the regular season finale, Brooks pinch-hit in the seventh inning drawing a walk in his lone at bat.
