Beaufort County Post 15 compiled 13 hits in a 9-6, comeback win over Ahoskie Post 102 (6-8 (5-6 Area 1) at Washington High School’s Futrell Field on Wednesday.

Undermanned by six players due to high school summer football obligations, Beaufort County managed to erase a three-run deficit and preserve its place atop the Area 1 standings, one game ahead of the Cary Bulls.

The Post 102 bats got to starter Chase Sauls early, as the rising senior lasted four-plus innings for the Pirates, giving up five runs on six hits and five walks, finishing with two strikeouts.

Ahoskie’s Jordan Brinkley took the first pitch of the game to the outfield for a double and would eventually reach third on an error. Nick Hoggard followed with an RBI double. Hoggard was plated two batters later by a Charles Lee sacrifice fly to right. With two outs, hits from D.J. Smith and Slade Cowan gave Ahoskie a 3-0 advantage.

The Pirates put the tough start behind them and exploded in the second inning for six runs, four that came with two outs. Brock Marsh ripped a double to lead off and Brantley Cutler reached on a fielder’s choice, though both came around to score on an infield error. Uriah Aaron and Tanner Alligood reached via walk and Kellum Cahoon, Nick Everette and Drew Ferguson answered the call with there-straight hits, bringing Post 15’s lead to 6-3.

After Sauls walked Brinkley and gave up a single to Hoggard in the fourth, Everette came to his aid in relief. However, a groundout, a fielder’s choice and a double from Cowan tied the game up at six.

Everette settled down and held Ahoskie scoreless through the final three innings, giving up two hits and one walk, striking out two.

Aaron, Cahoon and Ferguson all singled in the fifth, chalking up what was the game-winning run for Beaufort County. Two more runs of insurance were tacked on in the seventh.

Cahoon and Ferguson each finished with three hits apiece, while Hoggard finished 3-for-4 with an RBI for Ahoksie.

Post 15 will travel to Fleming Stadium in Wilson on Saturday to face second place Card at 1:30 p.m. and Wilson at 7 p.m.
