CROWNED QUEEN: As part of Belhaven’s Independence Day weekend festivities, the town hosted the 73rd annual Belhaven Independence Day pageants. Local girls in three different age groups competed in multi-round pageants, which included: evening gowns, private interview, creative expression and swimsuit for Miss Independence, ages 15 to 18; evening gowns, patriotic wear, onstage question and fitness for Young Miss Independence, ages 12 to 14; and Sunday best, patriotic wear and talent for Little Miss Independence, ages 4 to 6. Pictured are the winners from each age group. They are (left to right) 2015 Young Miss Independence Katie Hopkins, 2015 Little Miss Independence Lindsey Jo Newberry and 2015 Miss Independence Brianna Swain. Swain was awarded a $1,000 scholarship for her victory, while Hopkins received a prize of $100. Newberry received a trophy.
