A NEW FACE: The Turnage Theatre will host up-and-coming Nashville musician Jeff Miller for a Saturday night performance.

A new face will grace the stage of the Turnage Theatre this weekend, as up-and coming-artist Jeff Miller presents a genre of music that pairs well with Beaufort County’s love of grassroots music.

A graduate of Guitar Performance and Songwriting at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Miller will give a live performance at the Turnage on Saturday at 7 p.m. as part of his 19-day, 17-show summer tour.

Miller, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., has been playing music all his life, but he began to get serious just before high school when guitar and songwriting became his passion, he said. At his live shows, he uses devices to record and loop guitar and vocal parts, creating more sound than some bands do. Using his voice, guitar, hands and feet, he is able to act as each member of a regular band — singer, guitarist, bassist and even a drummer, Miller said.

With a sound that revolves around the rock/pop scene with a touch of folk and jazz, he currently has four albums under his belt and is working on a fifth album, one that will be recorded live and is completely instrumental, Miller said.

“People often compare me to Jason Mraz and John Meyer,” Miller said. “I just feel fortunate to be able to keep performing and making a living, period. If people want to hear me play, that’s a great honor, and I feel fortunate to be able to do it at all. That’s where my passion lies. When I go on tour, I’m encouraged by people’s reactions and it keeps me motivated in doing my music. It means a lot to me.”

Local residents and musicians Ronnie Daw and Mark Sillitoe, heard about Miller years back when he performed at a small venue in New Bern. They loved his performance and thought he would be a great fit for Beaufort County, which has such a love for grassroots music like that performed by the Beaufort County Traditional Music Association, Sillitoe said.

“I figured it would be a great fit to get him here,” Sillitoe said. “We just thought if we could get him here one time, he would come back again. That’s the big thing — all the work involved to get someone here. Once you do that, it’s easier to get them back. It’s just such a love of grassroots music (in the area), all the eclectic styles, I think people around here would appreciate this music.”

Joey Toler, director of the Beaufort County Arts Council, said the Council is looking forward to having Miller at the Turnage and strives to bring new acts to the local venue.

“If you want to hear a really outstanding, up-and-coming artist, the Turnage is the place to be (this weekend),” Toler said. “I’m constantly on the lookout for artists that are on the rise, and it kind of makes me feel like we have a good feel for who is good, if we can pick someone to show in the theater and look a couple years down the line and see how much they’ve accomplished. I hope people will come out and support him and support what we’re doing at the Turnage, because we need folks’ support to keep it up.”

Tickets for the show can be purchased for $10 in advance or at the door. To purchase tickets, call the Turnage Theatre Box Office at 252-946-2504 or visit the theater at 150 W. Main St. in downtown Washington.
