From the Beaufort County Arts Council
The Beaufort County Arts Council will present its first film series since moving to the historic Turnage Theatre. Beginning Sunday, BCAC will begin a four-week film series featuring science fiction classics. Each film will screen on Sundays at 4 p.m. through the month of August.
The series will open with “Tremors,” a 1990 comedic, dark comedy monster film about a group of people from a small town in Nevada fighting subterranean worm-like creatures. The film stars Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward and Reba McEntire. At its release, “Tremors” was well received and hailed by critics for its diverse cast and humor.
Aug. 9, the series continues with “Little Shop of Horrors,” the original 1960 version directed by Roger Corman. This black comedy horror film is a farce about an inadequate florist’s assistant who cultivates a plant that feeds on human flesh and blood. Of interest is that it features Jack Nicholson’s film debut. This double bill will also include the first episode of the 1936 film serial “Flash Gordon.”
Aug. 16 will bring “Teenagers from Outer Space,” the 1959 science-fiction film about an extraterrestrial space ship landing on Earth to use it as a farm for its food supply. The crew of the ship includes teenagers, two of who oppose each other in their activities. The film is double-billed with the second episode of the “Flash Gordon” serial.
The series will end on Aug. 23 with the camp classic, “Plan 9 from Outer Space.” From 1959 and directed by Ed Wood, the film tells the story of extraterrestrials that are seeking to stop humanity from creating a doomsday weapon that could destroy the universe. The aliens implement “Plan 9,” a scheme to resurrect the Earth’s dead. The film is double-billed with the third episode of the “Flash Gordon” serial.
Tickets are $5 for each screening and can be purchased in advance or at the door. Series passes are also available for $15. Call the arts council at 252-946-2504 for more information.
