On a special night when Terrance Copper, Tommy Woolard, Susan (Campbell) Hodges and Sam Leggett were inducted into the Washington High School Walk of Fame, the Pam Pack gave the new inductees plenty of reasons to smile.
Washington wracked up 536 yards of offense in a 47-6 thumping of South Central in Friday night’s Coastal Conference game. The Pack (5-1, 2-0), which has won four straight, got 454 of those yards on the ground.
Not to be outdone was the Pack’s defense, which limited the Falcons (0-6, 0-2) to 186 yards total offense and 10 first downs. Washington has allowed just one offensive touchdown in the last four games. Two teams only found the end zone because of kickoff returns for touchdowns.
Jamont Jones picked off two passes to give him a team-high five on the season. James Corey, Ron’Dayle Floyd and D.J. McKinney all recovered South Central fumbles.
Travis Daniels led Washington’s ground attack with 235 yards and a pair of scores on 22 carries, giving him 1,224 yards and 14 touchdowns on the season.
Daniels, who shook off a shoulder stinger in the first quarter, achieved the 1,000-yard mark for the third straight year.
The Pack did it through the air as well. Austin Thompson completed 6-of-7 passes for 82 yards. Three of those completions went for scores — 30 yards to Dakuan Spencer, 27 yards to Jones and 4 yards to Mike Moore.
Thompson’s touchdown pass to Moore (two catches for 17 yards) late in the first quarter gave Washington the lead for good.
The Pack exploded for 27 points in the third. C.J. Jefferson (58 yards on eight carries) got things rolling with a 26-yard bruising run up the gut. Thompson put it right on the money to Spencer (two catches for 34 yards), who snagged the ball on a crossing pattern between two defenders, and strolled into the end zone for a 21-0 lead.
South Central got on the scoreboard when Jimmy Stokes returned the ensuing kickoff 98 yards, making it 21-6.
The Pack took advantage of two late fumbles by the Falcons in the final few minutes of the second half to build its lead to 34-6. Jones hauled in an aerial from Thompson and had clear sailing to the end zone.
Following another Pack fumble recovery, Jones took a handoff and zipped 55 yards to the end zone for the score and the 34-6 advantage.
Daniels capped the scoring with a pair of rushing touchdowns in the third. He plowed over from a yard out to make it 40-6, then added a 67-yard jaunt for the 47-6 win.
Washington returns to action next Friday night at West Craven.
