Next week, the Cypress Landing community will host its annual Hope and Heroes Walk, a component of its annual fundraiser for the Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center.

The event will feature a choice of walking a 1.3-mile course or a 3-mile course, followed by a reception. The reception will include free pizza, donated by eight local restaurants and live entertainment from the band Never 2 Late, made up of two men from the Cypress Landing community. The cost to participate is $20 and the first 200 participants will receive a free commemorative T-shirt.

The residents of Cypress Landing, along with the Washington Yacht and Country Club and the rest of Beaufort County, have worked tirelessly to make the event possible. Though other components of the fundraiser require preregistration, those wishing to participate in the walk can show up the day of and contribute to the overall cause.

A simple walk around a golf course has raised and continues to raise money for people who desperately need assistance. Though cancer today is not looked upon like it once was, with today’s technology and treatments, patients at the center still need help with other things like transportation to and from appointments and, in some cases, assistance with paying bills like utilities. Funds gained from the multi-faceted campaign also make free, complimentary programs at the Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center possible. Each month the center offers lunch and learn programs that focus on a particular cancer-related topic, free massage therapies and yoga sessions, to name a few of the programs offered.

A little bit of time and money can be sacrificed to help make this campaign successful. Just call the Cypress Landing Golf Club at 252-946-7788 or show up to Cypress Landing Golf on Sept. 10. The event starts at 5 p.m. and is a more than worthy cause to contribute.
