Washington councilman looks to establish kickball league

From baby boomers to the millennials, there’s one timeless, backyard pastime that’s endured — kickball. It’s a humble game that doesn’t require any specialized equipment or over-the-top athleticism. All one needs are some bases, a rubber ball and about an hour of daylight.
Until three years ago, Councilman William Pitt’s experience with the sport was limited. As a child, his favorite activity was (and currently is) tennis, but after coming across an adult league through the City of Greenville, it wasn’t long before he was hooked. Now, he’s trying to bring a similar league to Beaufort County.
“It’s a blast,” he said. “You get back in touch with your inner child and really socialize … Kickball is a simple game that everyone remembers how to play — some folks have nightmares about it and some folks embrace it.”
Pitt spends a couple weekends each spring suiting up for “Pitt Crew,” his kickball team in the Greenville Adult Kickball League. The teams are coed and the regular season usually lasts about 10 games.
Working around the Optimist Club fall soccer season, Pitt hopes to apply a similar kickball league blueprint in Washington, “Kickball Sunday.” He says it would be a great addition to a county that hasn’t provided much in terms of adult athletics.
“One of the things I’ve noticed is we’re not reaching out to our adult population and they’re the ones who are spending money. It’s just about getting folks together for a good time,” Pitt said.
“Show up at ‘Kickball Sunday,’ bring good shoes, an open mind and a sense of humor. You won’t leave the field as you came. You will enjoy it. It’s just a lot of fun and takes you back.”
Every Sunday, teams will be picked just like in elementary school, a play-by-player draft. Once the teams are selected, games will last about 50 minutes. Pitt is projecting the league to begin in October.
