There is certainly no shortage of youth athletic programs in Beaufort County. Organizations like the Community Youth Football League, Beaufort County Police Activities League and the Washington Youth Basketball League have been staples in the community for decades. Newer programs like ExCEL and the Athletic Edge volleyball and soccer leagues have been great additions in keeping children active and involved.

In these programs, a foundation is set. Children absorb priceless skills like teamwork, sportsmanship and respect, while learning the games first hand. Area high schools have also had a significant impact on the lives of student-athletes, building upon the foundation set on the youth level.

But what about after high school?

For adults who are looking for an outlet of their own — a way to de-stress from the workweek, stay active and even shed pounds — there aren’t many options currently available. Athletic Edge debuted its adult indoor soccer league with great success in the spring, garnering a lot of interest. While there are local weight-loss programs and facilities to keep an adult fit, a gym or personal trainer definitely isn’t for everyone. Some people just want to relive their youth and compete.

Washington City Councilman William Pitt is looking to address the lack of adult sports programs by forming a casual kickball league this fall. While kickball isn’t the most physically demanding of sports, it’s a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon, get off the couch and socialize with fellow competitors. It’s also cheap, requiring only a couple of bases, a rubber ball and some decent shoes.

The City of Greenville has adult programs for basketball, softball, flag football, kickball, soccer and volleyball. Pitt County was also named a “Fit Community” by the State of the County’s Health Report. Pitt, who used Greenville’s kickball league as inspiration, says more of that is needed here in Beaufort County.

It’s time to follow Councilman Pitt’s lead and open up more athletic programs for adults.
