BELHAVEN — After last week’s rain-soaked season opener, there was nothing but blue skies and sunshine for the Week 2 Community Football League 8U matchup between the Washington Eagles and Belhaven Bulldogs on Saturday at the Belhaven Recreation Fields.
Using a balanced run attack, five different Eagles running backs carried the ball in a 20-6 victory over the Bulldogs. But the biggest blow to Belhaven came with 2 minutes remaining in the second quarter, when 7-year-old Josiah Jennette took a kickoff, tip-toed the sideline and returned it 55 yards for a score.
Zy’Mireon Sutton ran the ball five times for 19 yards, scoring both of Washington’s touchdowns, while Calek Smaw recorded three carries for 23 yards. For the Bulldogs, Hezekiah Mann led his team with 35 yards on two carries. Ethan Wilson ran for 17 yards on four carries, scoring the only touchdown of the afternoon for his team.
On the second play of the game, Washington made its first statement, hitting the runner hard on a draw play and recovering a fumble, giving the Eagles prime field position at the 40-yard line. A pair of 20-yard runs from Jennette and Zanek McCloud placed Washington in the red zone and Sutton would finish with three bruising runs, the third finding the endzone.
On the first drive of the second quarter, the Bulldogs had their answer. Mann broke free for a 30-yard run and Ethan Wilson finished with a 5-yard touchdown run. But on the ensuing kickoff, Jennette took the wind out of the Bulldogs’ sails with his dynamic kickoff return. A pass from quarterback Braden Smithwick to Oliver Thomas on the 2-point conversion gave Washington a 14-6 lead at the break.
Belhaven came out for the second half energized, forcing a fumble on the third play of the Eagles’ series, but Washington would answer with a three and out. The final score of the game came after a 33-yard run from Oliver put the Eagles on the 6-yard line and it was Sutton who put Belhaven away with a touchdown run right up the gut.
Despite a couple nice runs from Ethan Wilson and Chris Lewis, Belhaven ran out of time in the end to potentially chip away at the lead.
The Eagles will travel to Chocowinity next week to take on the Indians at 9 a.m., while the Bulldogs will look to rebound against the Greenville Titans in Washington at 10:30 a.m.
