Washington teen publishes sci-fi story

Sabe Wilis is a published author. He’s also a 16-year-old Washingtonian with a wider view of the world than most his age.

“Trials of Ambiguity, The Fall of Sector 38” is an exploration of those views. Set in the year 2108, two societies coexist uneasily in space — two societies that want to destroy one another, even though they are essentially one and the same.

“It’s a representation of the world we live in,” Wilis said. “Everything in society is divided up into two. It’s ‘Us vs. Them.’ An example is people thinking that you’re either conservative or liberal, and there’s no in between. People think you can’t form your own ideas. I find that disturbing that people are afraid to think outside of those two options. You’re either my friend or my enemy, there’s no gray area or anything in between.”

Wilis tackles a weighty subject in his first foray into the literary world. That he can recreate it in a fabricated society that only exists in his imagination is a product, he says, of autism.

“The thing about autistic people is they can create worlds in their heads, and at the same time not losing touch with reality,” Wilis said. “Sector E-38 is one of them. And it’s really vivid too.”

Wilis said though he struggled with writing and reading during his early school years, that changed in middle school. Technically, he’s a junior in high school, but he attends Beaufort County Community College and will graduate in 2017, one semester short of an associate degree. It was in one of his school classes that his story began.

“I started writing it around this time last year. The first draft was in the back of my math notebook, actually,” Wilis said. “My classes weren’t that difficult … so I just started writing.”

While his first published work is a study in ambiguity, Wilis’ plans for the future are not: he wants to study astrophysics in college. He also plans to flesh out “Trials of Ambiguity” as part of a larger work.

“Trials of Ambiguity, The Fall of Sector 38” is available on Kindle and Amazon.
