Workers with the N.C. Department of Transportation unearthed an old, unmarked grave this afternoon during a street repair project on West Fifth Street.

According to Lt. William Chrismon, spokesman for the Washington Police Department, the remains were inspected by officials with the police department, ensuring the bones were not a result of any suspected criminal activity.

“It appears to be an ancient grave that was unearthed at the edge of Beebe Memorial CME Church that was built in the 1920s,” Chrismon said. “There is no suspicion of foul play. It’s just one of those things that happens on a great occasion.”

According to Brian Rick, communications officer for NC DOT Divisions 2 and 3, workers for the DOT found the remains during a milling and resurfacing project on West Fifth Street, at which point they ceased operations and contacted law enforcement. Information on what will become of the remains and when the project will continue is unknown at this point.

“As far as what will be done with the remains, that’s beyond what I know right now,” Rick said. “Work will continue at some point, but we have to go through a process first.”
