A fire broke out around 2 p.m. Tuesday at a home on Chandler Road off of U.S. Highway 17 South in Beaufort County.

According to Chief Deputy Charlie Rose at the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, one man was found dead inside the home, but authorities are not releasing the name until the family has been notified.

Along with firefighters being treated on site for smoke inhalation, a Chocowinity EMS worker and a Chocowinity firefighter were taken to the hospital for medical evaluation, he said. Their condition was not immediately known.

Volunteer firefighters from Beaufort and Craven counties were called to help put out the fire, according to reports, as Chandler Road is located between Chocowinity and Vanceboro in Craven County.

Rose said authorities have called in the State Bureau of Investigation to help determine whether the fire was arson, but he said that is the usual protocol if a person is found deceased at the scene. He said the SBI has more technology to ascertain the circumstances around the start of the fire, including where and how it started.

“We’re not expecting anything as far as an arson,” he said. “They (the SBI) just have more resources.”

According to reports, it took fire crews about an hour and a half to bring the fire under control.

Rose said the sheriff’s office is still gathering details before more information will be released.
