As a result of taxes generated by tourist spending in Tyrrell County in 2014, each of the county’s 2,058 households paid an average of $238 less in local and state taxes.
That was the finding of Dr. Steve Morse, economist in the College of Business at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, and his students and recently reported.
Direct tourist spending in Tyrrell County in 2014 was $3.59 million, which created 10 jobs and produced $340,000 in worker income and paychecks, the report continues.
Tourist activity created $330,000 in county tax revenue and $160,000 in state taxes.
Morse’s report states that tourists spent 2.6 percent more in Tyrrell in 2014 than in 2013, and that tourist spending here over the past five years has risen steadily by an average of over $2,000 a week.
