From Literacy Volunteers of Beaufort County

Literacy Volunteers of Beaufort County will offer a tutor training class for prospective volunteers beginning on Nov. 9, at 9:30 a.m. in the conference room at Job Link on U.S. Highway 264 East in Washington. There will be three sessions that will include:  information about the organization and adult learning; using the language experience approach; teaching sight words and word patterns; combining reading theory and the writing process, increasing comprehension, testing procedures, lesson planning; and review of available books and materials. The class will be instructed by Pat Lurvey using the Pro Literacy America training materials.

LVBC provides one on one free tutoring for legal adults in Beaufort County who need to improve their reading, writing, speaking and math skills. They can help with basic computer skills, the GED, CRC, ASVAB and other employability tests. The sessions are always held in public places and the pair usually meet for 90 minutes per week.
