KILL DEVIL HILLS — Northside traveled to First Flight on Tuesday to open its basketball season. The Nighthawks won 84-51 to ruin the Panthers’ hopes of starting the season on the right foot.

First Flight doubled up Northside, 22-11, by the end of the first and scored 20 or more points in three of the four quarters. The hosting Nighthawks held the Panthers to just eight points in the second quarter and possessed a 39-19 lead at halftime.

The Panthers’ offense exploded coming out of the halftime break. They scored 20 points — more than they did in the whole first half. However, the defense didn’t answer in the same way. First Flight was able to score 25 of its own and took a 64-39 lead into the final eight minutes.

Jack Konstanzer (18 points), Devyn Dobson (16) and Reese Jones (15) led the way for First Flight’s offense.

GREENVILLE — Terra Ceia improved on its perfect start to the season by overpowering Pope John Paul II on the road on Tuesday. The Knights amassed 50 points in the second half to cruise to an 83-23 win.

Six players scored in double digits for the traveling Knights: Austin Roscoe (17), Messiah Barnes (16), Tyler Hendrix (16), Quentin Van Essendelft (12), Chase Furlough (10) and Kendall Bowen (10). Hendrix, Furlough and Roscoe all grabbed at least 10 rebounds to have a double-double, too.

Terra Ceia opened up a 33-13 lead by halftime before scoring 26 in the third and another 24 in the fourth.

ROCKY MOUNT — North Nash beat Washington on a late trey in the season opener. The Pam Pack got another shot at the Knights when they traveled to Rocky Mount for the second leg of the home-and-home series.

Northern Nash rolled over Washington this time, 71-43. The Pam Pack’s offense took a while to settle in as they scored just five points in the first quarter. That allowed the home side to jump out to a 18-5 lead after the first eight minutes.

They trailed the Knights 43-20 at halftime. Washington made adjustments on the defensive end to hold Northern Nash to 28 points in the second half, but the offense couldn’t produce the scoring necessary to close the massive gap.

KILL DEVIL HILLS — Northside’s girls’ basketball team lost its first contest of the season at First Flight on Tuesday. The hosting Lady Nighthawks, who already have five games under their belt, cruised to a 59-26 win.

The Lady Panthers — led by five seniors in Destiny Jones, Quortasia Clark, Sarah Rhem, Kendall Alligod and Mariah Stanley —have a quick turnaround. They’ll host Washington for their home opener on Friday.

GREENVILLE — Terra Ceia’s girls’ basketball squad struggled offensively against Pope John Paul II on Tuesday. The Lady Knights, who were shutout in the first quarter, fell 35-17.

Sydnee Neal led the host team. She led the team with 11 points and also nabbed nine boards. Lacey Ross left her mark with eight points. She also dished out three assists and her 13 rebounds led the team.

The loss marked the fifth in a row for Terra Ceia.
