Shirley Mae Cutler Koonce, age 80, a resident of Deer Tract Drive in Washington, passed away on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Koonce was born in Gaston, NC on December 19, 1934 to the late Floyd F. and Cora Justice Cutler. She was a retired Inspector with Hamilton Beach where she was employed for 29 years.

She was married to Troy Lee Koonce Sr., who predeceased her in 2009.  She was also preceded in death by three brothers and one sister, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She is survived by her children: Patty McAllister (Barry) of Washington, Troy Koonce Jr. (Mary Bowen) of Washington, Eston Koonce (Brenda) of Washington, Nelson Koonce (Holly) of New York and Renda Koonce Bland (Pickett Voliva) of Pamlico Beach, NC.  She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and three sisters.

Mrs. Koonce was a member of Grimesland Free Will Baptist Church.

A graveside celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 4, 2015 at Oakdale Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Steve Dail. Pallbearers will be Matt Buchannan, B.C. Bland, Picket Voliva, James Turner III, Troy Ball Jr. and Michael Lewis. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandsons, Billy C. Bland III, Dylan Bland and Tyler Koonce. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 3, 2015 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Hillside Funeral Service & Cremations and other times at the home of her son at 483 Deer Tract Dr., Washington.

Flowers are appreciated or memorial contributions may be given in Mrs. Koonce’s memory in care of Hillside Funeral Service. Donations will be distributed to the charity of the family’s choice.
