SPEEDY RECOVERY: East Carolina forward Deng Riak looks for a play to make against Florida Atlantic. The freshman will miss the remainder of the season.

GREENVILLE — East Carolina freshman Deng Riak will have surgery to repair an injured right shoulder and will miss the remainder of the 2015-16 season head coach Jeff Lebo announced Monday.

The athletic department will apply for a medical hardship waiver with the American Athletic Conference office in order to get back Riak’s season of eligibility. If approved, Riak will have four years of eligibility remaining, beginning with the 2016-17 season.

A native of Melbourne, Australia, Riak played in the first eight games of the season before being sidelined. He scored three points and grabbed eight rebounds in 45 total minutes.

Riak is the second Pirate forced to end his season early due to injury this year. Redshirt junior Marshall Guilmette’s playing career concluded prematurely due to a variety of injuries and setbacks prior to the start of the 2015-16 campaign.

East Carolina returns to action Wednesday, Dec. 16, at home against UNC Wilmington at 7 p.m.
