Miss Lena Evelyn Kite, 87, daughter of the late John and Carrie Edwards Kite, died Tuesday, December 29, 2015.

The funeral service will be conducted on Saturday at 3 pm in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel in Vanceboro, officiated by the Rev. Robert Worthington. Burial will follow in Celestial Memorial Gardens.

Miss Kite was born and reared in Vanceboro and attended the Vanceboro Schools.  She received both an AB and an MA degree from East Carolina Teachers College. She was in Pamlico County for one year then Plymouth, NC, for 6 ½ years. She was a librarian at Jacksonville Senior High School from 1960 until her retirement in 1981.  She was a member of First Baptist Church in Jacksonville, NC, and had attended West Vanceboro Church of God.

She is preceded in death by her: brother, John Franklin Kite and a sister, Annie Lee Powell.

She is survived by: her niece, Teresa Heckman and husband, Joe, of New Bern; nephew, John C. Powell Jr., of Morehead City; great-nephew, Christopher Powell of Morehead City; great-niece, Kellie Alphin of Elizabeth City; great-great-nieces and nephews, Jaxson Alphin, Karrie’ Lynn Alphin and Joseph Alphin, all of Elizabeth City, and Kaitlyn Powell of Morehead City.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 1:30 to 3 pm at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Vanceboro.
