Audrey Steven Henries, “Hank,” 84, died Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at Hospice Savannah. His beloved wife Eleanor of fifty-five years preceded him in death January 5, 2007.
He was born at Lowland (Goose Creek Island), North Carolina. He graduated from Aurora High School and at 17 enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He retired from the Air Force as a Chief Master Sergeant and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts. He also graduated from Saint Leo University, Summa Cum Laude, majoring in Criminology.
In the Air Force he received several achievement awards, which included Runner-Up Honor Graduate at the Air Force NCO Academy, chosen as Airman of the Year at two Air Force installations, Hunter AFB and Charleston AFB. During his military service, Sergeant Henries received the following decorations and awards: Air Force Good Conduct Medal (w/1 OLC), National Defense Service Medal (w/1 BSS), Air Force Longevity Service Award (w/4 OLC), Small Arms Expert Markmanship Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal (w/4 Br Lps), Korean Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award (w/2 OCL), Vietnam Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, USAF NCO Academy Graduate Ribbon, United Nations Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal and Meritorious Service Medal. Throughout his military service, Sergeant Henries gave faithful and conscientious service to his country. His standard of conduct and leadership provided an excellent example for those who were associated with him.
After Air Force retirement, he was employed at Gulfstream Aerospace for ten years, and then he owned and operated Lazaretta Seafood Company at Tybee Island for fourteen years. He was a Communicant of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church at Wilmington Island.
Survivors include two daughter, Karen Boutwell (Mickey) of Savannah, Jo Anne Brooks (Jackie) of Blackshear, GA; one brother, Max Henries (Barbara) of Angier, NC; five grandchildren, Jennifer Boutwell, Shaun Boutwell and Amanda Maner (Ryan) of Savannah, Jeremy Sanders (Aubrey) of Orangeburg, SC, Jessica Sanders of Waycross, GA; and seven great-grandchildren, Payton and Madison Sanders, DeWayne Wilson, Kayla Sanders, Brianna Brooks, Adriana Boutwell and Dylan Maner.
