DRAWING WORKSHOPS

Choose Tuesdays in February or Thursdays in March — or both. Both workshops consist of four sessions each, from 6-8 p.m.

The classes will begin with instruction on basic drawing, shapes, a little on perspective, techniques, shading and highlights. Students will begin with pencil, the most versatile of drawing media, and good for precision and control. The class will discuss and work with different mediums as the workshop progresses. A workshop fee of $70 includes all materials: sketch book, various pencils, charcoal and erasers to keep. Other tools and materials will be provided for use during classes. For those who wish to continue developing their skills at the conclusion of the workshop, information will be given on drawing tools, materials, their uses and where to purchase them.

CERAMIC BIRDHOUSES
Feb. 13

Back by popular demand and just in time for spring, potter Carolyn Sleeper of Washington will lead students in hand building a customized birdhouse for one’s home or garden. A $45 enrollment fee covers everything, including the kiln firing and return of the final art a few weeks after the class.  The class will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The instructor is Kaye Lee Brady of Utah, and recently of Belhaven.

FINE ARTS-PORTRAITS
Impressionist Oil Painting
Feb. 20

Students will begin with comprehensive instruction on facial construction and perspective, followed by developing their drawing skills with shading and highlighting in pencil, then advancing to painting. Live model will be provided for the afternoon portion of this class. The class will be from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  There is a $50 instruction fee and $10 materials fee. The instructor is Mark Hierholzer of Richmond/Swan Quarter.

WOODBURNING
Feb. 27

Multimedia artist Cathy Clayton of Ponzer will teach students the proper and safe use of wood-burning tools and the application of various tool heads while learning how different woods and grains can affect the outcome of one’s efforts. Building on basic skills, students will also have the opportunity to concentrate on shading to create 3-D effects. Practice materials, tools, templates and small plaques will be provided. If one already owns a wood burning kit, bring it. The goal is to get students completely familiar with their own tools, as it may differ slightly from those in the clean lab. Equally, if one has a piece or material one has been working on, or a special drawing or template one wants to use, please feel free to bring it.  The class will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.  There is a $35 fee, all-inclusive.
