The Down East Seniors Club held its Feb.10 meeting at the Blind Center of North Carolina in Washington. President Ed Hamrick led the meeting. Chip Ide led the singing of “God Bless America” and Charlie Mike Smith gave the invocation. Dick Paul provided humor.

Several members told of interesting or humorous experiences they have had.

Gene Schwartz presented his personal profile. He was born on an Iowa farm in 1936. He attended a one-room school through the eighth grade and rode to school on a horse. He attended Iowa State University where he graduated in 1958 with a degree in agriculture. Since he had been in ROTC in college, he entered the U.S. Air Force as a second lieutenant and went to pilot’s school. During his Air Force career, he flew many different planes and retired after 28 years of service. Gene and his wife, Ellen, spent three years in Germany, nine years in Saudi Arabia and five years in Las Vegas. Then they moved to Beaufort County (her home) where they now live near Bath.

Mark Eakes won the 50/50 drawing.
