From the North Carolina Estuarium

The North Carolina Estuarium will host “Songs and Stories from the Washington Waterfront Underground Railroad” on Thursday night as part of the Estuarium’s ongoing educational series.

Join Leesa Jones as she shares her expertise about Washington’s role in The Underground Railroad. Learn how the Washington waterfront and the Pamlico shaped the world and personal histories. The program will be held at the Estuarium on Thursday from 6-7 p.m.

The Washington waterfront has long been recognized as a “gateway” to freedom for enslaved people. In 2014, The National Park Service designated the waterfront as a “NPS Underground Railroad-Network to Freedom” site. The messages in the songs and stories have been orally passed down in tradition for many generations in the African American community. The program will feature singing, dancing and an array of plants and other items that would have signaled to enslaved people information about escape plans to freedom. Audience participation makes this a fun and engaging event.
