Upcoming courses at BCCC Small Business Center

The Small Business Center at Beaufort County Community College is putting on a series of workshops for nonprofit organizations, including “There’s Always Money for Good Ideas” and “How to Start a Nonprofit Business.”

A two-part series, “There’s Always Money for Good Ideas,” will help experienced grant seekers. A “good idea” meets a need, solves a problem or improves a condition for individuals or a community. Successful entrepreneurs in the non-profit or for-profit sectors are able to identify problems, propose solutions and convince funders to invest in their ideas. In this two-part workshop, Michele Oros will provide hands-on experience researching and writing needs assessments; designing concrete, measureable objectives; and creating justifiable budgets. Unlike introductory grant writing courses Oros previously taught for the SBC, this workshop is designed for more experienced grant seekers who are ready to put their ideas into words. Michelle Oros has been actively and successfully seeking grant opportunities for Beaufort County Schools since 2003. The workshops will take place on March 12 and March 19 from 9 a.m. to noon in room 822 of Building 8. They are free to attend, but participants should pre-register.

A second workshop, “How to Start a Nonprofit Business,” is designed to help set up the structure of a nonprofit organization. There is a tremendous interest coming from communities wanting to know how to form a non-profit business. Careful consideration should be given to this process, including following all the proper steps. Failure to do so could result in serious consequences for individuals as well as becoming detrimental to the organization’s cause. This workshop will help community members considering starting a non-profit organization. Participants will learn what a non-profit organization is and refine their definition of a non-profit. They will find out the steps to forming a non-profit, what forms and documents need to be files and what takes place at the first board meeting. They will evaluate whether an attorney is necessary. Sam Gore, the workshop leader, was a professor of Supervised Ministry at the Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute for nine years and served as a pastor for 21 years. Gore is also trained as a Christian mediator, helping churches solve conflicts without entering litigation. The workshop is free to participants and will take place March 17 from 6-9 p.m. It is free to attend, but participants should pre-register.
