Spider-Man, Olaf, Minnie Mouse, Disney princesses, Elmo and even the Easter Bunny joined area youngsters for a fun-filled morning March 5 during the most recent gathering of ACCEPT and ExCEL, local organizations that serve children with special needs.
The party, held at the Whitehurst Lake House west of Washington, included characters courtesy of 3 Wishes and a Hero party planners. The organization won the party in a drawing after Libbie Woolard entered ACCEPT and ExCEL in the contest, according to Allison Crisp.
“We got drawn for this fun party,” said Crisp, a founder of ACCEPT and ExCEL. “This was a day of smiles with super special characters touching the lives of some really super special kids and their families.”
ACCEPT and ExCEL host activities at least once a month, including regular fun days and field trips. All events are open to special needs children ages 3 through 18, as well as their families, friends and caregivers. Everyone in attendance is made welcome and are free to express themselves in their own fashion, according to Crisp.
“There are no pressures to be quiet or to not flap their hands with excitement, and there are no worries for parents if their child is being loud or stared at by others,” she said. “Our number one goal is to make sure these children know that they are surrounded by people who understand. All children have the right to have fun and enjoy life regardless of their ability level.”
During the event, the youngsters created their own crowns and masks, danced, played games and had their photo taken with their favorite characters. The next fun day is scheduled for March 19, with Easter festivities taking place from 10 a.m. to noon at Tranter’s Creek Resort and Campground in Washington.
Generous donors have helped provide the financial means to offer the special events and field trips, Crisp added.
