Lloyd W. “Jack” White Jr.

Jack White, 92, of Washington, passed away on Tuesday, March 8, 2016. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years who passed away in February.

Born in Washington, Jack was the son of Lloyd W. and Mary Bell White. He was one of the first Eagle Scouts in North Carolina and helped with the scout troop at the First United Methodist Church for years where he was a member. During WWII Jack served in the Army and fought in the European Theater. After the war, he attended East Carolina Teachers College, now ECU, and NC State University, remaining a diehard Wolf Pack fan. He worked as an engineer for the North Carolina Highway Dept. until he retired.

Jack was a talented musician, had his own dance band and played in many other bands, including the Army band and the Shriners’ dance band. He supported the Washington High School band for many years, including driving one of the buses to every football game, and to parades in and out of state. Jack was a proud member of the Confederate Grays Foundation. He was an avid sailor and a longtime member of Blackbeard’s Sailing Club. He and Joyce sailed the Joy-Jac and enjoyed taking family and friends cruising on the Pamlico Sound and River, the Neuse River and to the Outer Banks. Jack designed and built several homes in the area, including all five of their family homes.

Jack is survived by two sons, L.W. White III (Windy) and Sue of Charlotte, NC, Dr. Fred Ashley and Dr. Shelly White of Ocala, FL; a daughter, Pamela W. McAlister and John Traynum of Easley, SC; a granddaughter, Kristi Smith and her husband, John of Charlotte; two grandsons, Ashley White and his wife, Jill of Charleston, SC and Ethan White of Gainesville, FL; and two great-grandsons, Grayden and Finley.

A memorial service to celebrate Jack’s life will be held at a later date. The family respectfully requests that memorial donations be made to the Greenville Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605 or to the charity of your choice.
