Mr. Vernon Corbin Canady, age 92, a resident of 1135 Swindell Road, Pantego, died Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at Vidant Medical Center, Greenville.

A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, March 13, 2016 at the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home in Belhaven. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. Tim Copeland, Ernie Ratcliff, Bishop Williams, Charles Daw, William Jones, Bonner Allen, Jack Mitchell and Bobby Hodges will serve as pallbearers. The staff of Paul Funeral Home will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Mr. Vernon was born in Beaufort County on September 14, 1923, son of the late Walter Frederick Canady Sr. and Maude Letha Duke Canady. He was a graduate of Pantego High School. Mr. Vernon served his country during World War II in the US Navy. He was a retired farmer and an employee of Paul Funeral Home for over 60 years. He was a charter member of the Pantego Volunteer Fire Department for 48 years and a member of the Board of Directors until the past two years, a member of the Tideland Electric Membership Board of Directors for 25 years, a member of the Pantego Ruritan Club, and a member of the Pantego Christian Church. In 1999, he was named Citizen of the Year, Grand Marshal by the Belhaven Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Vernon married the former Evelyn Roberson, who preceded him in death, October 20, 1991. He later married the former Mildred Alligood, who preceded him in death, April 8, 1995. He is also preceded in death by his brother: Walter F. Canady Jr. and his sisters: Dorothy Baxley, his twin sister, Cora Bishop, Virginia Copeland and Joyce Canady. He is survived by a nephew, several nieces, great nephews and great nieces.

Mr. Vernon was considered a true southern gentleman and his warm hugs will be missed by many.

The family will receive friends from 1:30-3:00 PM prior to the service on Sunday at Paul Funeral Home in Belhaven. Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 3219 Landmark Street, Unit 9, Greenville, NC 27834.
