Playing its fourth game of the week, the Washington Pam Pack played perhaps its most complete game of the year in beating the Ayden-Grifton Chargers in Ayden by a score of 8-0 on Saturday. The Pack was very efficient on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.

Offensively, the Pack had five hits, but induced 12 walks out of the A-G pitching staff. Defensively, A-G also had five hits, but Pack pitchers struck out nine Chargers while surrendering six walks. Perhaps the most telling stat of the game is that the Pack did not commit any defensive errors as well as turned two double plays. While youth has been served at times this year, the maturation process continues as evidenced by the improved defensive performance.

The Pack struck for two early runs in the top of the first on a walk to junior Cody Godly, a solid base knock by Frederick Holscher, and an error on the Chargers’ second baseman on a sharp grounder by Neill Jennings.

The Pack struck for four more runs in the second a walk to sophomore catcher Cooper Anderson and a triple by junior centerfielder Matt Black. Black was followed by a walk to Godly and another hit by Holscher. Junior starting pitcher Logan Little drove in the final run of the inning on another single.

The Pack added another run in the third on a walk to Anderson, a stolen base and passed ball, and a fielder’s choice. The boys scored their last run in the top of the seventh inning after a single by senior Logan Winstead. Pinch runner Jacob Smith came around to score on a combination of walks, a passed ball, and a stolen base.

Defensively, Little was outstanding. He threw five complete innings allowing five hits, striking out five, and issuing five walks. Critical to the game, the spacing of walks and hits, as well as excellent defense, resulted in Little facing no more than four Charger batters in all five innings.

No Charger advanced beyond second base during Little’s stint. Sophomore Chris Sulc came on to provide relief in the sixth and seventh innings. In two innings of work, Sulc allowed three hits, issued three walks, but struck out four Charger batters.

The Pack now stands at 6-3 on the season. Next week’s games include home tilts with Northside on Wednesday and Ayden-Grifton on Thursday.
