The victim of a fatal car wreck on Saturday at 5 p.m. has been identified.

Richard “Bill” Shavender Jr., 70, of Washington, died after losing control of his red 1966 Corvette and crashing into a ditch on U.S. Highway 264, where the road splits with N.C. Highway 92.

Shavender made a right turn off of Camp Leach Road onto Highway 264, accelerated while trying to switch gears before losing control, according to First Sgt. David Clifton with the state Highway Patrol. Shavender died at the scene.

The Corvette crossed the centerline, striking a Cadillac Escalade head on. Delray Quinvy-Alexander Jennette, a resident of Belhaven, was driving the Cadillac, traveling west on Highway 264, Clifton said.

Jennette, who sustained non-life threatening injuries, was airlifted by an EastCare helicopter to Vidant Medical Center, Clifton said, although he was unsure whether Jennette had been released from the hospital as of Monday afternoon.

Responding to the scene Saturday were Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, Highway Patrol and Bunyan Fire and EMS. The road was blocked in both directions, and traffic was rerouted.

It is protocol for law enforcement to not release a victim’s name until the next of kin has been notified. Funeral arrangements have not been set as of Monday, but Hillside Funeral Service & Cremations is working with the family.
