The Beaufort County Choral Society has new life, and a new performance this weekend.

The all-volunteer choir will perform its spring concert, “River Song,” at two venues: at Arts of the Pamlico’s Turnage Theatre in Washington on Saturday night, and St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Bath on Sunday afternoon.

Under the leadership of BCCS director Stephen Brand and accompanied by concert pianist Heidi Souza, the BCCS members will sing a variety of songs, including a chorus from Handel’s “Messiah,” a couple of jazz pieces and spiritual songs, though they all have a common theme, according to Judi Hickson, BCCS president.

“They’re all beautiful songs about the river,” Hickson said.

Hickson said Brand’s addition as director has brought new life to the 30-plus member choir.

“He makes rehearsals fun and he keeps us on our toes. He challenges us and he’s getting stuff out of us that is just gorgeous, if I do say so myself,” Hickson laughed.

Both concerts are free and open to the public, but donations for BCCS will be accepted. The Saturday performance at the Turnage begins at 7 p.m.; the St. Thomas performance begins at 3 p.m. Sunday.
