Jammin’ for the Vets to raise funds for Legion Post 15

It was a chance conversation that led Lee Cherry to volunteer his services for local veterans.
On May 14, Cherry will host Jammin’ for the Vets at American Legion Post 15 in Washington. The night of music features three acts leading up to event headliner David Lee Jones; the event, exactly what Cherry specializes in as owner of Lee Cherry Entertainment. In that role, he’s been all over the country promoting artists and providing entertainment. However, it was at a recent ALS fundraiser held at Post 15, that a conversation with one of its veteran members alerted him to the fact local Post members were struggling with the facility’s expenses, he said.
“It struck me at that moment, ‘You know what? I got to put something together to help those guys out,’” Cherry said.
The event is both a fundraiser for Post 15 and an opportunity for the public to show their appreciation for local veterans, Cherry said.
“All of this is to raise money for the American Legion. I’d say 90 percent of the money is going straight back (to them),” Cherry said. “We’d like to do this a couple of time of year to help keep that building up.”
Cherry referred to all four of the event’s musical acts as “up and coming” artists — performers to whom he’s offering the opportunity of stage time and for their music, exposure.
Exposure isn’t limited to the musical acts, however. While the America Legion is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, Cherry said he’s been told the numbers of wartime veterans taking part in the local organization have dwindled over the years. Cherry said he’s hoping the exposure that comes from events like Jammin’ for the Vets will help Post 15 recruit more members.
He also said community support has been fantastic, from sponsors and individuals.
“I’ve had a lot of veterans respond and say thanks for putting this together,” Cherry said. “I’d really like to see some of the older veterans come out because we’ve got a fun night planned for them.”
Jammin’ for the Vets begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $5 in advance, or $8 on the day of the show. Post 15 is located at 200 American Legion Road, Washington. For more information, visit facebook.com/leecherryentertainment.
