EASTERN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TA FOR THE DAY: Eastern Elementary School sent out invitations to all Beaufort County commissioners and Beaufort County school board members to help promote awareness of the importance of teaching assistants in elementary classrooms. With state budgets and county budgets continuously decreasing, teaching assistant positions are not guaranteed from year to year. With the new school year approaching, the teachers at Eastern Elementary wanted to extend an opportunity for these officials to spend a day or a few hours walking in the shoes of the very hardworking teaching assistants at Eastern Elementary. On May 4, Robert Belcher had the privilege of working with Lisa Williams' kindergarten classroom for a half-day experience. Belcher taught a literacy whole-group lesson, taught a small-group reading mastery lesson, escorted children where they needed to go and assisted in lunch duties with Williams. We hope this encourages other officials to make time in their busy schedules to experience the fulfilling and memorable time he spent working as a TA. Even just a few hours can help anyone see the true value and hard work put in daily by our teaching assistants.
