MULTI-FACETED: Custom Marine Group’s newly acquired facility on Whichards Beach Road includes four other brands: Fountain, Baja, Donzi and Pro-Line.

Baja Marine LLC, formerly Fountain Powerboats, has a new name and new ownership.

Custom Marine Group officially announced its acquisition of Chocowinity-based Baja Marine on May 2.

“Custom Marine Group will leverage the decades-long legacy of brand leadership built among the partners to accelerate superior product development, enduring customer service, and consumer-driven geographic expansion in its reintroduction of the boating industry’s most iconic brands,” a press release stated.

The boat construction company encompasses four brands: Baja, Fountain, Donzi, Pro-Line and now Custom Marine.

Marketing manager Clint Garant said there will be some changes at the local level, but they are positive changes.

TEAM EFFORT: Christian Wilkins, Jaron Baze More, Claude Moore, Reggie Ross and James Daniels work on one of the boats near the back of the Custom Marine facility.

Garant said the new Custom Marine is looking to hire about 100 more employees, doubling its size, and this would likely increase the rate of production. The physical space will remain the same.

“We’re just going to add to what we already have,” said Carol Price, who has worked with the company for 29 years, of the employment opportunities.

Price said the acquisition has been in the works for around four months, and the addition of jobs will be plant-wide.

It is also expected to provide more jobs to specifically local residents. Price estimated that about 90 percent of the current employees are Beaufort County residents.

“We’re all tired because it’s been an enthusiastic week,” she said with a smile.

Price said the employees are excited about the name change, and last week the new owners came to have lunch with them to get to know everyone.

“That went a long way,” Price said.

Fountain Powerboats has continued to grow since its founding in the 1970s, including Baja’s fairly recent acquisition of the Fountain, Donzi and Pro-Line brands in 2012.

Price said the new week doesn’t just mean “business as usual,” but rather “business, let’s go.”

“It’s just a win-win for everybody,” she said.
