The Down East Seniors Club held its May 18 meeting at the Blind Center of North Carolina in Washington. President Ed Hamrick led the meeting. Chip Ide led the singing of “God Bless America,” and Ed Bolen gave the invocation. Dick Paul provided humor.

Hamrick introduced Dr. Philip Ninan, psychiatrist. Ninan discussed the medical perspective on sex and gender. A person’s sex determines his or her physical appearance and reproductive capacity. Sex is generally male or female, although 1 percent of the population is “intersex,” which is when there are physical, hormonal or emotional ambiguities. Gender is on the emotional level and is generally masculine or feminine. Ninan also answered many questions.

Ide won the 50/50 drawing.
