Three men have been charged with murder after a Sunday night shooting left one Washington man dead and another injured.
The shooting took place at approximately 8:50 p.m. on Linda Drive in the Rivercreek neighborhood near the line between Beaufort and Pitt counties.
Initially, 911 calls from cellphones reporting the crime came into the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office E-911 Call Center, but were transferred to Pitt County as a matter of jurisdiction, according to Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Charlie Rose.
Pitt County deputies responded to the scene and found Antonio Harris, 28, of Sticks Road, Washington, and Nicholas Gorham, 20, of Blake Street, Washington, suffering from gunshot wounds, according to a PCSO press release. Harris died as he was being transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville; Gorham was treated and released, the press release stated.
On Monday, Pitt County investigators arrested Joseph Jackson Gibbs, 21, of Clark’s Neck Road, Washington, Justin Emanule Whitley, 24, of Chaplain Street, Greenville, and Lecarlos Jermaine Anthony, 26, of Jimmy Lane, Washington.
“In a matter of a couple of hours, (investigators) arrived on the crime scene, gathered evidence and began to find the three responsible for this violent crime,” reads a statement on the PCSO Facebook page. “Their determination to get these criminals off the streets of our county led to their quick apprehension.”
Gibbs, Whitley and Anthony have each been charged with an open count of murder and booked in the Pitt County Detention Center under no bond.
Pitt County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Christy Wallace said there was no indication of why the shooting happened, but the investigation is ongoing.
“I’m not sure we’re ever really going to know, but we are looking into that,” Wallace said.
PCSO asks that anyone with information about the crime call 252-830-4141 or call Crime Stoppers at 252-758-7777.
