From the Beaufort County Soil & Water Conservation District
“We All Live in a Watershed” was the theme for the 2016 poster and essay contests sponsored by the Beaufort Soil & Water Conservation District. The poster contest is open to all students in third through sixth grades in the county. Area schools submitting posters and/or essays were John Small, P.S. Jones, Chocowinity Middle, S.W. Snowden, Northeast, Pungo Christian Academy, Unity Christian Academy, and Washington Montessori. The essay contest was for sixth-graders only. Debbie Boyd, education coordinator with Beaufort County Soil & Water, presented ribbons and cash prizes to the poster and essay winners at a recent gathering held at the Agricultural Center in Washington. The teachers who submitted first-place posters/essays also received cash prizes. In addition to their awards, the first-place winners’ posters and first-place winners’ essays competed in the Area 5 competition with posters and essays from other districts. Anna Stoop and Maddox Lee, students at Pungo Christian Academy, received first place in the area competition, which includes 16 counties. Their posters moved on to the state competition where they both received honorable mention.
