Despite official Memorial Day ceremonies being cancelled Monday due to weather, several dedicated veterans and citizens came together at Veterans Park in Washington to hold an impromptu service. U.S. Army Airborne Vietnam veteran and Washington native Robert Fleming played representations of all branches of the military as the group of 15-20 people clapped, applauded and at times sang along with the moving tunes. Standing at attention were veterans of WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War from the services of the U.S. Marines, U.S. Army, U.S. Army Airborne, U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force. Pictured left to right are Scottie Taylor, Navy, peacetime; Mary Roberson, representing her Army Airborne husband, Vietnam; Mayhew Wallace, Air Force, Korean War; James Jenkins, Army, WWII and Korean War; Vance Sneed, Army, Vietnam; Archie Harding, Army, Korean War; Stephen Carpenter, Navy, Vietnam; Arthur Moore, Army, Vietnam; Cecil Ebron, Marines, Vietnam; and Robert Fleming, Army Airborne, Vietnam. A few veterans continued their day by having a meal at Grub Bros., sharing stories and experiences. They vowed to get together again soon.
